A friend recently asked me how I make the postcards, so I thought I’d explain the mechanics for anyone who’s curious.
Once I’ve decided on the text for a set of cards, I type it up and print it out large (Georgia, 90pt). This becomes my guide as I sketch outlines of the letters in pencil onto the front of blank postcards. (Mine came in packs of 50 from Ryman, with “POST CARD/THE ADDRESS TO BE WRITTEN ON THIS SIDE” and a square for the stamp printed on the back.)
Then, blotch by blotch, I fill the letters in with black gouache, a water-based paint.
